UNITED STATES AND UNITED NATIONS 2 The United States and the UN have had a long history of relationship that has existed since the year 1945 when the UN came into existence. The foundation of the UN was after the Second World War where leaders of all nations all over the world joined to form the UN with the primary objectives of promoting stability, peace and order among the foreign nations. However, today, the aims of the United Nations have broadened to the extent of facilitating relations in international law, security, social progress, education, health, economic development, looking into human rights and working towards achieving peace all over the world. The UN was then established to replace the inefficient body known as League of Nations, which was flawed and could not perform its functions efficiently. Therefore, the UN came into place upon agreement of five permanent members of the Security Council to work towards creating an efficient body that could work towards fostering relations among the member states. These five permanent states were the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, and China who wholly represented forty-six other signatories. The leaders of the United Nations had high hopes concerning the effectiveness of the union in its role to promote peace and end conflicts among the nations; however, these hopes were never fulfilled. Since its establishment in the year 1991, there arose several conflicts that led to the division of parts of the world during the cold war and these wars made peacemaking efforts so difficult. Later on, the Soviet Union broke away from the UN leaving the US in a position of global dominance and with several responsibilities of making sure that the body did not fall. The United States, therefore, played a significant role in the foundation of the UN and making sure that the organization performed its tasks effectively. This supremacy of the United States has led to conflicts between the US and other members of UN after the collapse of the Soviet Union, which resulted in fallout of China from the UN. There has been much tension between the US and the other members of UN due to several oppositions and lack of agreement concerning several issues that affect the union.
