The Sure Fire Way to Protect Our Freedom Alea Roach The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution states, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” Now I know that immediately some of you liberals will begin to jump to the position posited by many in the anti-gun lobby – that the Second Amendment only implies that the militia should have weapons. Unfortunately, this is another example of how liberals tell bald face lies in attempts to deprive Americans of our constitutionally protected rights. Those who drafted the constitution clearly understood that the Second Amendment applied to the right of each citizen to possess firearms. Thomas Jefferson, a principal architect of the constitution, stated “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.” Patrick Henry admonished us, “Guard with jealous attention the public liberty. Suspect everyone who approaches that jewel. Unfortunately, nothing will preserve it but downright force. Whenever you give up that force, you are inevitably ruined." George Washington when he spoke to the first session of congress emphasized the key role that guns play in our liberty. “Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the people’s liberty teeth keystone…the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable…more than 99 percent of them by their silence indicate that they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms everywhere restrains evil interference. When firearms go, all goes, we need them every hour.” It is also telling that when the drafters of the constitution compiled the amendments which enumerated the rights of the people, the right to keep and bear arms was placed second only to the right of free
