Advantages and Disadvantages of K+12 2 Advantages and Disadvantages of K+12 Introduction The Philippines is one of the last countries to convert K+12 curriculum. The term K+12 stands for kindergarten (K) to grade 12. K+12 simply describes the years of education students will have in the Philippines. As most countries already converted to K+12 long before the Philippines, there were many debates about it. Many parents wanted it as it will give their children more opportunities in the future while some disapproved stating that it will be burdensome to them as it will prolong their children’s education; thus, causing them to be delayed in having stable jobs. There have been some reports saying that Filipinos are currently having a hard time in applying to jobs especially overseas as they are “incompetent” because they lack the length of education that other applicants from other countries have. As of 2012, the Philippines started to use K+12. Many schools are now preparing complete plans for new parents which will allow them to choose something that will successfully prepare their children to get in higher educational institutions. Although it is already tested and highly approved, there are still parents and students who are unsure of what K+12 will offer them. Thus paper will focus on the advantages and disadvantages of K+12 in the Philippines and will answer the following questions: 1. What is K+12? 2. What are the provisions or principles of K+12? 3. How does it affect the education in the Philippines? 4. What are the advantages of K+12 to individuals and societies?

Advantages and Disadvantages of K+12 3 5. What are the disadvantages to parents, professors and professional resources? K+12 The new General Education (GE) Curriculum, which is K+12 means Kindergarten and the 12 years of elementary and secondary education. Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro presented the Basic Education Sector Reform Agenda (BESRA) last March 2012 in the annual membership meeting of the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd). BESRA, as a package of reform initiatives, considers K to 12 as the flagship reform strategy (Oteyza, 2012). The model that is currently being proposed by DepEd is the K-6-4-2 Model. This model involves Kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grades 7 to 10) and two years of senior high school (SHS) (Grades 11 to 12). According to DepEd Discussion Paper (2010), the change is two-fold – the curriculum enhancement and transition management. The intention of K+12 is not only to add two years of schooling but more importantly, to enhance the basic education curriculum.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
