Dylan Stawarek EDU 250 9/11/2007 Chapter 1 1. What are the six key characteristics of teachers as professionals? There are six key characteristics of teachers as professionals. The first key characteristic of teachers as professionals is the fact that they have and can use expert knowledge and use this information to improve the lives of others. As well, Teachers also have to prove they know and understand the expert knowledge they have by passing a license exam. Another qualitative feature of teachers being professionals is, that every day teachers have to make important judgments about the material that they needs to be relayed on to others and what is the best way to teach the material Teachers add intellect to a schools environment, the more gifted teacher must to show better results in the students. On top of all that, teachers also have to follow a specialized set of standards and principles which determine how qualified they are. Like all the other profession, teachers are determined by a feeling of aspirations for their work and their students. 2. What are the three key issues that cause teaching to be referred to as a semiprofessional rather than a profession? Teaching is often referred to as a semiprofessional because they are unable to take pleasure in the same privileges as some other professions. Schools are frequently obligated to hire poorly trained people or persons who are trained in a subject in which they are not trained in due to teacher shortages. Teachers also have no say in the hiring or dismissing process of fellow colleagues. Furthermore, teachers do not get a choice of what individuals they will be teaching in class
