CE 573: Structural Dynamics Structural Control Devices Supplemental Dampers Idea: Add damping to the structural system by inserting dampers directly into the structure. Advantages: Fairly cheap and easy to install – good for seismic retrofitting. Disadvantages : Need many dampers to get noticeable increases in structural damping. Long-term reliability not good or not known.

Vibration Absorbers Tuned Mass Damper: Idea : Large mass is installed in structure that vibrates “in tune” with the structure (but out of phase due to dampers). Energy is dissipated due to relative motion between building and TMD. Advantages : Effective against large amplitude excitations. Disadvantages : Need large mass in order to be efficient. Not good with pulse-type motions. Tuned Liquid Damper : Idea : Similar to tuned mass damper, but uses liquid for moving mass. Advantage: More compact. Good for retrofitting applications. Get more damping due to sloshing. Disadvantages
