CE 573: Structural Dynamics Overview of Finite Element Analysis Idealization Idea: Model the structure as a collection of small elements (beams, plates, rods, springs, …) connected at nodes. Define the global degrees of freedom at each node as appropriate for each element type. Note: Usually have displacement-related quantities as the DOF (translations, rotations, curvatures, …) . You can have other quantities (e.g., stresses, strains, …) in a so-called “hybrid” formulation. Element (Local) Formulation Idea : For each element, compute the element-level (local) stiffness matrix [ ] e k , mass matrix [ ] e m , and external force vector { } () e f t in terms of local DOF. Note : Damping matrix is dealt with later – typically not computed at local level.
