9 Enzymes may work alone or with a cofactor • Cofactors: – Inorganic ion (Fe 2+ , Mg 2+ , Mn 2+ , Zn 2+ ) – Coenzyme (organic or metalloorganic molecule) • Prosthetic group: a cofactor that is tightly or covalently bound to an enzyme • Holoenzyme: a complete, catalytically active enzyme and its cofactor • Apoenzyme (a.k.a. apoprotein): protein portion of holoenzyme
