Dorian’s reaction to the portrait is disheartened with the realization that he will never be as young and beautiful as he is in that portrait. He becomes troubled with the idea that his portrait is so beautiful, yet he will not be so beautiful forever. This is shown when he has an outburst about how old and ugly he will grow, “How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will always remain young” (Wilde 19). Imagery can also be shown in this statement, because the descriptive words Wilde uses to describe how Dorian thinks of his future self and how the portrait looks, it helps make a mental image of what both look like. 2.
