The night Dorian takes Lord Henry and Basil to the theatre to see Sibyl perform begins as a joyous occasion as he crows on about his amazingly talented love. He is infatuated with Sibyl, and their newly engaged status. The excitement of their love and engagement slowly fades as her performance comes to an end, and the three men witnessed Sibyl’s appalling performance. Sibyl states that she is now too in love to perform, she has Dorian now and has no longing to act anymore. This is shown when she says, “I hate the stage…even if I could do it, it would be profanation for me to play at being in love” (Wilde 63). After this statement, Wilde uses imagery of Dorian plumping himself on the couch, which helps the reader understand his disbelief and disappointment, this can be shown here, “He flung himself down on the sofa, and turned away his face” (Wilde 63).
