Asian final study guide 1. 1947 Constitution of Japan - post war constitution- recast Japan with an American mold - intent: to replace Japan’s imperial system with a liberal democracy goals: democratization, demilitarization - a monument to the memory of General MacArthur- SCAP- during the American Occupation of Japan - included the infamous Article 9 which required Japan to forever renounce war in MacArthur’s attempt to create a pacific Japan and prevent Japan from becoming an aggressive military power ever again - dissastisfied with draft produced by the Diet - drafted by Americans in 6 days- General Whitney, but presented as a Japanese draft - included sweeping constitutional reforms: suffrage for women and support for labor unions - has never been amended despite its foreign origins - Japanese people increasingly advocating amendments, yet, Japan wants to be able to maintain its commitment to pacifism 2. US-Japan Security Treaty and the fight over its revision - peace treaty which formally ended the American occupation in Japan - U.S. can still use Japan as a military base - Treaty compromised Japan’s independence- however, treaty was negotiated during occupation therefore Japan had little say in its terms - Japan’s right to self-defense disarmed - New treaty signed in 1960- revision towards a more mutual defense treaty - Massive rioting by students and trade unions- they want even more concessions from the U.S. - Prevented a visit from Eisenhower - Treaty passed by default when the House of Councillors failed to vote on the issue within the required 30 days - 3. General Douglas MacArthur - SCAP of the American Occupation - Wanted the occupation to be a monument to his memory - As if he were a new emperor - Famous photograph of emperor paying respect to Macarthur- symbolizes the relationship between Americans and Japanese and the new roles of these two people - MacArthur was ignorant about Japan- the occupation was arrogant and idealistic - Had the mentality that Japanese were immature, they must be guided and taught, to help them grow - MacArthur was a loner, strange, yet the Japanese felt secure with him - 4. - the PRC and the Republic of China both claimed to be the legitimate government of Chinese people, the establishment of diplomatic relations with the PRC led to the breaking of relations with the Republic of China - the U.S. continued to maintain extensive, informal economic and cultural ties with Taiwan… backing up Taiwan to keep it from Beijing - American ties with Taiwan have diminished while China’s ties with Taiwan have grown steadily closer - Despite events, both sides recognize that it is in their interest to maintain the status quo- a peaceful and profitable relationship in which Taiwan continues to act as an independent state, but does not declare its independence - We want peaceful reunification, we advocate the one china policy, we do not want China
