January 21 st 2008 - Final exam – take home -get them last class. The Holocaust - An event that embedded in ww2, there are senses in which the holocaust is not strictly speaking part of the war in terms of military conflict. - It comes from the Old Testament and it was a great calamity and an inhalation. - It refers to a deliberate policy of mass killing. Particularly associated with a policy Germans adopted in killing Jews. But plenty of non Jews also killed and caught up in the holocaust. - Some populations were targeted because of their political views, and their sexual orientation. There were people who were targeted because of racial characteristics like the Sinti and Roma the holocaust- the actual scale of it is very unknown but the usual figure is about 6 million people but depends on how you think of it and how many people you include in it. Death camps and concentration camps. - Key concentration camps like Auschwitz were responsible for deaths in numbers like 1 million people. - When we look at the holocaust and try to understand it, the great scale of killing in the middle of the 20 th century. - Idea of progress would suggest that 20 th century should be more humane an democratic - But it was very violent. - 20 th century governments had access to weapons of mass destruction. - Weapons of mass destruction including machine guns bombs and Arial bombardment went back to the beginnings of the 20 th century. - Military technology enabled the deaths of many people. - When we look at the origins of the holocaust- the core of it was that it targeted Jews. This is by no means to say that large numbers of Russians and Ukrainians, and other east Europeans were also targeted. - The core of it was an attempt to wipe out the 8 million Jews that were living in Europe. - Very tempting to look back to early statements of Nazi ideologies to try to find the origins of this. - If you look back at the early speeches of Hitler there is plenty of evidence of anti- Semitism. - Jews were defined as rodents, parasites or disease. They were something to be fought because it was unhealthy. -
