Feb 11/08 - Cold war ended around 1991- large portions of budgets allotted to military armaments. - It was more political and ideological then military. - There was no direct confrontation between the armed forces of the major players. - Many organizations in Europe began to adopt a military style. - Everything began to get militarized. - The militarization of language in the 1950’s - The cold war began to purvey domestic politics, culture and influenced the way that we described things. - The reality is, that the cold war, which is expressed in Europe between the countries of NATO and the WARSAW PACT. - Fundamental division that Europeans lived with between 1945 and through to the 1990s so maybe through half of the 20 th century. - The two fundamental organizations of the cold war were NATO AND WARSAW PACT - NATO- 1949 – France, Italy, UK, and Canada and the US. West Germany in 1954. the entry of west Germany into NATO that created the conditions for the creation of the Warsaw pact - Warsaw Pact was a mutual assistance treaty dominated by the USSR, but included Poland, east Germany, Czechoslovakia , Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, - This was a division of Europe. - At the end of the Second World War, as the soviet troops moved westward to Berlin into Germany, they began to occupy many areas of Eastern Europe. - The soviet troops, the red army occupied Poland, soviet zone of Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and a certain amount of Austria - Austria was created as an independent state after ww1 in 1918 or 1919, part of treaty of Versailles was that Germany and Austria should not become one country - This has been challenged in 1938 by the union of Germany and Austria when German troops simply moved into Austria. - Even the very name of Austria suggests that it apart of the eastern empire of Germany. - Question whether Austrian occupation was willingly absorbed, or forced into it. - If willingly absorbed it makes them willing accomplices - After the war in 1945 – Austria’s independence was asserted once again , but just like Germany Austria was occupied by the four powers. - Austria was also divided into 4 powers. - As far as Austria was concerned all the occupation troops left in 1945 - Yugoslavia was created as a nation state of southern Slavs in 1918- it had been invaded by Germans during ww2, but the partisan Yugoslavian forces had been able to expel the Germans without the assistance of the soviet forces - Tito was the leader of the partisans – Yugoslavian forged out a effected position
