Jan 7 th , 2008 Period from WW2 to 2008 – 2 nd half of the century there was a continuing threat of the war, called the cold war. Cuban missile crisis in the early 1960’s No major conflicts that affected Europe directly. - regional and local conflicts in Europe but nothing like ww1 or ww2 - Looking at a different set of issues when looking post war to the present. - Issues: division between western and eastern Europe. - Occupation of much of Eastern Europe by Soviet Union. - Europe became the key region for understanding the cold war, political rivalry to the early 1990’s - IR proved to be very important in the first half of the 19 th century. From 1945 to the early 1990’s they were overlain by broader division between east and west. - Both sides, struggle within each country and by leadership to retain independence from the two superpowers. - Many more similarities between eastern and western Europe during the cold war then we can imagine. -
