GERENA HEALTHCARE NEWSLETTER Volume 1 / Issue 1 GASTROINTESTINAL HEALTH What is the Gastrointestinal System? The gastrointestinal system is mainly for ingesting food and it breaking down and giving the body energy. There are six components of the digestive system; ingestion where food goes into the mouth, next there is mastication where the food is being chewed, next is digestion where the food starts to break down, then there is secretion where acids, enzymes, and water assists in the breakdown of food, once it is all broken down the absorption process takes place into the blood, and lastly, excretion is where any unused waste releases from the body. The primary organs that are part of the gastrointestinal system are the mouth, tongue, esophagus, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, gallbladder, pancreas, rectum, anus, pharynx, and liver. All of these organs play a vital role in the function of the gastrointestinal system.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
