West Born in Philadelphia, grows up within the Quaker community (he is not a Quaker) Given lots of encouragement to paint In the 18 th century portraits are the main form of art o Colonies are Protestant o No king or sovereign Want portraits to describe them, and the material world in which they live o Attends to texture of cloth o Represent them as they appeared and as they wanted to be Pretty illiterate People had to read to him Given a print, encouraged to paint his own version Had no academic training, self-taught painter Knows OF history painting, aware of art theory Never been to Europe, but tries to create a classical background Treats the brush like a pencil Realizes he needs to go to Europe to get better o No academies or schools in the colonies o Travels first to NY o 1760 goes to Italy o Spends three years in Italy, much time in Rome o Financed by merchants in Philadelphia Interest in investigating archeology of the classical past
