History 1376- Paper Assignment #3The United States has had a multitude of conflicts throughout all it’s years as a country. One of the preeminent conflicts that the United States had to face was the Civil War. Also known as “The War Between the States,” because it was a war fought between the United States and Confederate States in 1865 over the conservation of the institution of slavery. The Civil War has made abiding effects on the United States today by reuniting two unions, ending the institution ofslavery and helping to establish the country that we know today. The four most significant eventsthat led to the Civil War was the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott decision, and Abraham Lincoln’s election. The first event that prompted the Civil war was the Compromise of 1850. In 1846 the United States and Mexico were at war, because the United States wanted to annex Texas and expropriate other Mexican territories. After two years, in 1848 the war concluded and the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed. The treaty redrew the lines of territory, which gave the UnitedStates a third of Mexican land. Americans started moving into these lands hoping to turn them into states. In the 1849 California had a large enough population and was qualified to apply for statehood. California wanted to enter as a free state, but the Southerners deplored it because it would mess up the balance of pro and anti slavery senators in Congress, on the other hand the North was concerned about the rest of the Mexican territory becoming slave states. In addition, abolitionists were becoming more balked with the slave trade in Washington D.C., while the southerners were also growing frustrated with the fugitive slave laws, which guaranteed the return of slaves who escaped from a southern state into a free state; they felt as if the northerners were slacking off and not implementing the laws. With these problems, Henry Clay decided to make a compromise made up of four bills to end all disputes between the North and the South.
The first bill granted California admittance into the United States as a free state. The next bill organized the Mexican land into the Utah and New Mexico Territories and gave them popular sovereignty. The third bill outlawed the slave trade in Washington D.C.;The fourth bill dealt withthe Fugitive State laws, that stated that an accused runaway slave will have to face commissioners who will be paid five dollars if they say that the slave is free and ten dollars if they say that the runaway is a slave.1The reason why the Compromise of 1850 lead to war, was because it was only able to solve the problems for a couple years, but after caused exacerbate problems to emerge.2The compromise failed because some of the bills made disputes worse rather than fixing it. For example, the Fugitive Slave Act was controversial because it denied runaways a trial by jury and it
