Ryan Williams December 6 th 2007 Golf - Just a Game? As Nick Faldo said, golf is “the turning of the upper body against the resistance of the lower body back and through” . While this may be a good definition for your average science textbook, part of the beauty of golf is being able to appreciate the game on its multiple levels . What many people do not understand is that golf is not merely a game; it draws on elements from every spectrum of the human existence . Physiological, psychological, and even mystical elements exist, depending on who you ask . Golf can be played for recreation, competition, relaxation, even for the health benefits . One can see that golf is more than just a mere game . Golf is a lifestyle, a passion, and a metaphor for a much bigger game, the game of life . The most basic component of golf is its physiology . No matter how hard you think about a shot, your body has to physically perform an action to advance the ball . Understanding the way the human body and brain function is key to mastering of the game of golf . With golf’s explosion in popularity came the inevitable advent of the golf instruction book, a common place to find examples of the physiology of golf . Whether it be keeping an elbow locked, snapping at the wrists, or keeping one’s head down, most traditional forms of advice focus directly on the body and its movement . This makes sense, considering the movement of the body is what will eventually make the ball go
