Chem320A, Spring 2008 Structures Assignment-10 points-due Tuesday, Feb. 26 in lecture. As I have telling you an important skill in organic chemistry is the ability to recognize functional groups and to quickly draw several structures of organic molecules. The following assignment will provide you with practice in drawing chemical structures, naming organic compounds, and learning functional groups. You will get the most out of the assignment if you do all on your own. We will work on some of these during the problem sections. Practice in drawing structures Provide 10 different structures (isomers) for each of the following formulas having the specific functional group. You may use structural formulas, condensed structural formulas, but the more practice you get in using line formulas, the better.

Unformatted text preview: Do as many as you can. This is to give you practice in drawing out several isomers having the same empirical formula. Calculate of the degree of unsaturation for each. It will help you in drawing out structures. 1. Esters with formula C 6 H 12 O 2 2. Ketones or Aldehydes with formula C 6 H 12 O 3.
