Chem320A, Spring 2008 Structures Assignment-10 points-due Tuesday, Feb. 26 in lecture. As I have telling you an important skill in organic chemistry is the ability to recognize functional groups and to quickly draw several structures of organic molecules. The following assignment will provide you with practice in drawing chemical structures, naming organic compounds, and learning functional groups. You will get the most out of the assignment if you do all on your own. We will work on some of these during the problem sections. Practice in drawing structures Provide 10 different structures (isomers) for each of the following formulas having the specific functional group. You may use structural formulas, condensed structural formulas, but the more practice you get in using line formulas, the better.

Unformatted text preview: Do as many as you can. This is to give you practice in drawing out several isomers having the same empirical formula. Calculate of the degree of unsaturation for each. It will help you in drawing out structures. 1. Esters with formula C 6 H 12 O 2 2. Ketones or Aldehydes with formula C 6 H 12 O 3. Carboxylic Acids with formula C 7 H 14 O 2 4. *Alcohols with formula C 6 H 14 O 5. *Ethers with formula C 6 H 14 O 6. *Alkyl bromides with formula C 7 H 15 Br 7. *Amines with formula C 5 H 13 N 8. *Alkanes with formula C 8 H 18 9. *Alkenes with formula C 6 H 12 10. *Alkynes with formula C 7 H 12 *For practice in nomenclature, please provide the systematic names for all the isomers you draw for this functional group....

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
