2/22/07 Thursday Mid-term is a week from today. Short essay format – 5 questions. 1 Question on first section of course (nature of theory, problem of the one and the many – one general conceptual question). 3 Questions on Karl Marx. 1 Question on Weber (central concept in the protestant sect essay – starts on page 127 – key concept that he uses later on on protestant ethics) All of the questions use either a phrase or a quote from the text/lectures. What does professor look for? – 1) do you understand the basic concept/problem, 2) can you draw out and explain the implication (what’s the problem with the concept, what does it mean, does it illuminate the world?. .. etc.). 15-20 minutes a problem. What is the concept of feudalism and why does Marx place so much emphasis on it? Key transition point to capitalism. Explains how transition occurs. Marx speaks a lot about the idea of the fetishism of commodities. Why is this important to him? How he talks about the commodity takes on their own life etc. – alienation of people. 2 weeks from today will assign 2 essay questions due in May.
