1/18/07 Thursday HW: Read Marx essays #1, 2 , 3, 4, 5 , 7 , 8 (basically first 3 sections of the book, underlined most important) Exams are short essay questions (ex. What does Marx mean by “…”) I. The Nature of Theory A. The pressure to theorize 1. What is theory? a. We all try to understand the world 1). Humans are the only higher animal with a neo-cortex, which allows us to see into the future b. We have the ability to see ourselves in the moment 1). We can reflect on our environment 2. Humans beings have always tried to understand their relationship with other human beings 3. We need to explain why things are a. All human beings have always had some sense of religion, a sense of explaining the meaning of the world and why we are here b. In order to get a sense of control and order 1). Religious systems develop in order to affirm a sense of order or to see/ visualize a sense of order a). Ex. Explanation of why seasons vary gives rise to Sun God (sacred) or how earth moves over time (secular) b). Natural Law: finding underlying meaning of the world 2). Problem: These interpretive framework often get in conflict with each other a). Pervasiveness of theory 3). People need a framework to understand the meaning of the world 4. The most common type of interpretive framework is the quest for knowledge a. We have a need to search for knowledge through trial and error 5. We have always tried to manipulate the environment a. Used tools in a very sophisticated way b. Experiment/trial and error gives rise to invention 1). Developing a theory of how to use a tool and create it B. Theory of Perception
