Political Parties Political Parties- A group of likeminded people that try to decide how to run certain part of country (county, state, national, etc). What do parties do? reasoned debate and offering alternative opinions on policy issues PIG (party in government) control over the 3 branches running government creating policies minority party PIE (party in electorate) us the voters volunteer for campaigns donate time and money PO (party organization) structure of party political conventions responsible for platform (what the parties believe) levels of party can get involved at any level Why only two parties? Texas has minor parties Libertarian Party-ideological- strict belief system Green Party- ideological- strict belief system Republican/Democrats- Compromises loose belief system coalitions of differing groups Republican coalition is made of: faith based conservatives constitutional libertarians (limited government( business conservatives Democratic coalition made up of: Racial/Ethnic/LGBT/Gender Minority Groups labor unions Social/faith based progressives Why is Texas/South so Republican? Limited national government (state’s rights) Something happened between 1950s-1970s to switch us from Dem. to Rep. The Democratic coalition collapsed Southern segregationists leave the party and became Republican. Rebrand themselves--- State’s rights. Civil War changed everything for Texas and people decided to start deciding during the Reconstruction to support more of the Republic ideals Realignments- Shifts in the makeup and power of political parties Texas political statuses in order Populism (came with the pioneers associated with the Jacksonian Democrats)- a belief in the power of regular people, and in their right to have control over their government rather than a small group of political insiders or a wealthy elite. Classical Liberalism (came to Texas with independent-minded citizens of Mexican descent like Lorenzo de Zavala, the first president of Republic of Texas) - political ideology that values the freedom of individuals, including the freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and markets as well as limited government.
