ART 100 The indigenous people of the Americas and Africa did not create ritual, political, or decorative “works of art,” but rather they created utilitarian objects, adorned in ways that enhanced their ability to perform their cultural function. Select one example from your textbook. How does the context in which we view this object (in a museum vs. in use within it’s original cultural context) affect our understanding and importance of this work? The Moche culture was known to make utilitarian objects such as ceramic molds, metals, and vessels. The vessels that the Moche culture were able to make were massed produced. The various vessels that were made all had their own unique pattern to them. For example one vessel that was created during the time period of the Moche showed a Moche Lord sitting on a thrown- like structure associated with high office. The Lord is sitting wearing an elaborate headdress and large earspools and strokes a feline.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
