2 O 4 ∙2H 2 O Introduction In this lab, we attempted to determine the molar mass and molecular formula of the product that forms when a weighed sample of FeC 2 O 4 ∙2H 2 O is heated. To determine the mass of the product, we needed to heat the reactant, the hydrate FeC 2 O 4 ∙2H 2 O, in order to allow the water component to evaporate. Once we obtained the mass of the remaining product, we attempted to determine the empirical and ultimately, molecular molar masses (molar mass= mass/ moles of substance) by using our experimental data. Experimental During the sterilization of the crucible, I removed the crucible from the clay triangle before the bottom of the crucible was red-hot. Since the crucible had already been beneath the Fisher Burner for 10 minutes, I felt it safe to proceed with the experiment. While FeC 2 O 4 ∙2H 2 O to a constant mass, I only had to reheat the reactant twice, because my second measurement only differed from my first measurement by .001g. Data and Observations During the initial heating of FeC 2 O 4 ∙2H 2 O, the substance underwent a gradual color change from yellow to black. During the heating to constant mass, the black color remained. When the product was left to cool, the substance underwent a gradual color change from black to dark red. The various color changes indicated that a chemical change was taking place. Bryan Smith
