Temaat Madalyn Temaat Mrs. Gosney AP English Literature and Composition 18 September 2016 Dominant American Values Our country embraces many values as if they are the foundation on which we were built. Some values are more prominent in this modern day society than others. In this day and age as well as in my own personal opinion, one of the most important aspects of our society is equality. Equality takes many different forms from things like racial, gender, and socio- economic. Equality is a complicated value and is something that we as a society have truly struggled with for many years. Equality among the genders has been something that has been brought back into the spotlight with the feminist movement. Starting back in the 1800’s with the Women’s Rights Movement, there has always been a struggle for women to be equal to men. It wasn’t until 1920 when women gained the right to vote while their male counterparts had been able to do so since the dawn of time. Even in the workplace, the glass ceiling is still in place. This unbreakable barrier keeps women from reaching the upper rungs on the corporate ladder, which in my opinion is hardly fair at all. Men are picked over women to do things like lift heavy boxes and do physical labor when in all reality, if given the chance, women could do said task just as easily. There’s this whole idea of gender equality and that because of the feminist movement that men and women are now equal to one another and that because of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that prevents any kind of discrimination in the work 1
