March 3, 2009 planetary surfaces II Terrestrial Planet Surfaces – key concepts Impact craters • common feature of SS surfaces • due to impacts from space, much more common in the past • surface density primarily related to surface age • other factors – location, gravitational focussing, type of planetesimal • size of crater depends on mass and velocity of impactor • analysis of all factors allows estimation of surface age • most bodies show range of surface ages… Volcanic features • volcanic craters different in appearance from impact ones • variety of volcanic features found in SS • presence => internal heating Tectonics • Large scale/global forces at work that alter surface • Compression, stretching, cooling, plate movement… Weathering • Alteration of surface due to wind, water • Surface chemical reactions important – see Earth, Mars

March 3, 2009 planetary surfaces II Surface conditions and history •Bow l-shaped ±Mart ian ± crater: as expected for impactor on rocky surface • Extra large bump in centre, and ripples beyond the rim •S u g g e s t c r a t e r formed in mud: impact vaporized underground ice?
