1 Chapter 1 Ch304k Dr. Deborah Walker The Air and Pollutants • The air we inhale interacts with delicate tissues inside our bodies. • So we’d do well to ensure that each molecule we inhale is safe and beneficial to our bodies. • In chemistry, we examine compounds and their interactions—this study allows us to make decisions about what is safe and what is beneficial. It also allows us to make decisions about laws that govern the production of harmful substances. This Week’s Topics • Risk Assessment • Concentration • Number of Molecules or Atoms • Periodic Table • Chemical Reactions • Green Chemistry “Zero” Pollutants? • Unreasonable • Unattainable Risk Assessment • Toxicity: degree of hazard to health • Exposure – Amount • Concentration • Volume –T ime Concentration • pph : parts per hundred – Aka “percent” – 7 pph = 7% = 7 parts per hundred parts • ppm : parts per million

2 Number of Molecules or Atoms • How many molecules of O 2 in a breath? – Let’s say we use an exhaled breath – Inflate a balloon with one breath. Tie off. – Measure circumference. –C = 2 π r ; calculate radius – Use radius to calculate volume; V = 4 π r 3 /3 – Now you have an estimate of the volume of one of your exhaled breaths – Use ratio in textbook of 2x10 22 molecules of air mixture in 500 mL volume Practice • Group Work pages 22-23 of packet Periodic Table • Arranged by… • Arranged in groups and periods • Similarities exist among… • Names for “families”… Chemical Formulae • Chemical Formula – Symbolic representation of a molecule
