Due to several factors: o Urbanization (didn’t need them as much) o More complex political and social structures (when they got more complex men’s status became way higher and they were given more superiority than before, leading to women’s insignificance o Nonagricultural middle class with high value on getting and inheriting property (women were useful in farming classes, and couldn’t own any property. They could hold value only with their dowry when married) o Listen to father, then husband then son · Priests lost a little power when Hinduism changed due to Jainism and Buddhism competition o Other ways to reach god o Special knowledge of sacred truths o Mental, physical discipline o Extraordinary devotion to the deity o Puja (service to deity) wash, bath or feed statue o Pilgrimage o · The caste stayed the same o Brahmin -priests and scholars o Kshatriya -warriors and officials o Vaishya or Shudra - merchants, artisans and landowners o Eventually, fifth group Untouchables ”- Members of other avoided them because of the demeaning or polluting work that they were given
