Habit and customs are why humans are prejudice *Relativism* - There is no objective or universal truth to questions such as how we should live. o Arguments for relativism: People do not agree Culture Segregations Individuals Ages Different people desire different things Counterpoint* o Exaggerated disagreement o Disagreement does not = relativism People are made happy by getting what they desire Counterpoint* o “People spend their lives chasing something that doesn’t really make them happy. Life is full of deception”. o Arguments against relativism: Can lead to social apathy If it is true, there is no right and wrong-can lead to immoralism Loosen moral restraint. Social consequence: people need morals to help them achieve what they are capable of Causes thoughtlessness and followers Implies there are no answers, no answer, nothing to think/consider. o Why do we want to believe relativism? We believe it can solve intolerance. Aristotle’s stance (Non-relativism) o Live a life of moral virtue, or philosophy o Distinction between happiness and contentment o Human nature Can figure out good and bad But with a lack of instincts
