Willis Thai EN1014 12/18/06 “My Idea of Gilgamesh is That Not All People Are as Great as You Say They Are” My idea of Gilgamesh is that Gilgamesh, who seems strong, is not as great as the villagers say he is. He has his own weaknesses no matter how strong he is physically. I believe that in this story, Gilgamesh is downgraded to be similar to the people in his town after being shown as the most powerful. That is why I believe that it’s the turning point. In the beginning Gilgamesh starts off strong. He is described as “the strongest one of all, the perfect, the terror” and “two-thirds a god, one-third a man”. This would give one the impression not to mess with him, or one would be destroyed. At one time Gilgamesh even resisted the charms of the goddess, Ishtar, which can also describe his strength, even though it’s not physical. He accused her of being nothing but a goddess by saying “What could I offer the queen of love in return, who lacks nothing at all?” and also has the guts to say to Ishtar that she’s going to torture him.
