Willis Thai EN2114 Final Draft of Essay I – Think In The Mind Of Another 2/18/08 My idea about this poem is that it plays around with opposites, whether tangible or intangible. Examples would be looking on the good side of things, comparing the present with the past, watching the change in feelings of the characters, and noticing a transition in the mood of the conversation. The bad sides of a prostitute aren’t looked at; rather the good side is looked at. A prostitute is usually described as filthy and having a poor lifestyle. However, in this poem a prostitute is described as having a rich and luxurious life style. Their life style can be compared to that of the upper class. They have fin garments, prosperity, and forget all about migraines and melancholy. This poem turns from the present to the past. In each of the stanzas the past, which is the negative side, is compared with the present, which is the positive side. In the past, ‘Melia had a lack of garments and was busy digging potatoes, but now she has many bracelets and clothing. She also spoke with accents, but now speaks like the people of the upper class.
