Abstract The review of this paper is presented in different separate chapters; each considering different aspects of rammed earth construction. It covers definition, construction process, construction tools, formworks/moulds, the advantages and disadvantages of rammed earth construction. In addition to the literature review the practice of rammed earth construction in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa has also been studied and model house pictures are presented. Rammed earth is a simple construction technique achieved by compacting earth between formwork to make a homogeneous mass wall. It is a form of unbaked earthen wall construction in which walls are formed by compacting moist sub-soil inside temporary formwork. Rammed earth walls typically exhibit a distinctive layered form as a result of the construction process, corresponding to the successive layers of soil compacted within the forms. This attractive appearance is undoubtedly one of the appeals of rammed earth construction and as a result walls are frequently left without plaster or render. Transparent treatments, such as sodium silicate spray or carnauba wax solutions, are more commonly used. Different researches classify earth materials in to three main types that the builder can select: namely Adobe, Rammed Earth, and Pressed (or machine-made) blocks. This term paper tried to look into rammed earth as an alternative construction material. Selecting the appropriate type of soil is the first process and then the selected soil has been prepared and excavated. In general processing of soils for rammed earth construction consists of preparation of soil, excavation, screening, Pulverization, stoke pilling and mixing thoroughly to correct moisture content. Moreover, prior to placing the mix into the formwork, variations in soil quality, including most importantly moisture content, is minimized.
