Unformatted text preview: Notes on Common Ground: The Twymons: Black- Rachel- mother of 5- On welfare, abandoned by her husband- 3 sons turn hostile and aggressive- 13 year old daughter becomes pregenant- BLACK SUFFERED FROM BUSING- Hoping that busing helps improve their sub-standard education- Her children were being bused to white schools- Living on the fringes of the ghetto but has ties to black middle-class The McGoffs: Irish- Alice- mother of 7- Husband died- IRISH SUFFERED FROM BUSING- Charlestown- Want to change dynamic of their school and STOP busing- Didn’t want desegregation and busing in their school- Charlestown Highschool- Upset because the middle-class Irish Americans (Garrity) did not have to live with the direct effects of integration in the suburbs- Living in public housing in an ethnically homogenous Charlestown- Divers: Wasps/ Yankee- suburban progressives- move to multi-racial South End and cannot handle the realities and move to Newton- did not suffer from busing- Colin is assistant to Mayor Kevin White- Colin is in favor of busing, but not when his own son might be bused to a foreign neighborhood- Middle-class Louise Day Hicks:- elected as BLANK of the Boston School Committee in spring of 1961- at first, quiet and uncontroversial- in 1963, elected as the chairwoman of the school committee- after the citizens released a report charging that 13 of the city’s schools were over 90% black and 11 of these schools were at least 50 years old and the newest was 26 years old and all wer short-changed on funding, she assured the group’s black VP that she understood and sympathized (124) with the grievances and would do what she could to fix the problems- she did not respond to Mrs. Batson’s demand for action to the school committee and the superintendent, Frederick J. Gillis said that no child has been deprived the right to attend any boston public school because of race, religioin, or national backgroun 125- black representatives from NAACP presented 14 demands. The committee accepted 12- they refused to acknowledge the “existence of de facto segregation in boston”- committee refused to accept the existence of de facto segregation and they refused to compromise with the blacks- she produced a statement that explain that there are sections of negro areas in boston because of social conditions that we cannot control; she dedicates herself to cooperative solution to these problems and dedicate sincere effort to work together o no specific plan and no recognition of de facto segregation and acted as if it was out of her hands- shortly after, she withdrew the statement- she only regrets that children are not going to school in order to boycott- she refuses to recognize that there is segregation in the schools- Kennedy encouraged Hicks to compromise with NAACP- She does not believe that she is bigoted - blacks held her accountable for what happened after their demands and statements- she wanted to seek pay raises for custodians - 1965- Racial Imbalance Act...
