Alex Suarez Period 2 8 November 2016 DBQ Between the years 1824 and 1850, America had undergone a reform impulse that swept the nation. The reform movements had the purpose of expanding personal freedom as well as spreading the idea of individual self-improvement. Several movements were started during this period, including the temperance movement, the abolition movement, the education movement, and the women’s rights movement. For the first half of the nineteenth century, politicians ignored many social issues such as the quality of education and the unequal status of women. The reform impulse began in order for these social issues to be heard and to be changed by the politicians of their time. The reformers themselves believed in a vision of liberating society while also keeping it controlled. Many of the reform movements followed democratic ideals in that the majority of them pursued equal rights, individual freedom, and liberation; however, there were some Americans who did not support the reformers. Education was a reform movement that was brought about by Horace Mann. Mann, a lawyer and politician, was the main reformer for this movement. The purpose of the education reform was to establish common schools that all, or a majority, of children could attend. Mann wanted for a growth in public education to restore true equality by allowing the children of different classes to come together.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
