Sociology 101 March 25, 2008 2 nd exam will be 2 weeks from today (April 8 th ) Bureaucracy : organizational model rationally designed to perform tasks efficiently Traits that are supposed to promote organizational efficiency 1. Specialization 2. Hierarchy of offices - people are set in a vertical arrangement (pyramid) 3. Rules and regulations - has to operate in an organized fashion 4. Technical competence - people have to know what they are doing in their positions 5. Impersonality - rules first, not personal needs; everyone is treated equally 6. Formal written communications - memos or emails; a lot of paper work instead of face to face 4 major problems of Bureaucracy: 1. Bureaucratic alienation - alienation from your natural ability to be creative (constantly following rules/ continuous line of work 2. Bureaucratic inefficiency & ritualism- cannot figure out the task it was initially designed to do (i.e. red tape—calling to talk to one person and keep getting transferred to other people).
