Jena Losch English 110 Online 5/18/08 Long-Cherished Wish Our life paths twist and turn, travel dangerously close to treacherous cliffs, and cross some raging rivers all in the pursuit of some goal, either it be for happiness, success, or love. Every trial that we have to overcome add to our knowledge and our life experience, forming us into the people we are today; this mirrors what happens in many novels. This “journey” a character takes is exemplary of the literary structure of a bildungsroman: a main character starts out from a loss of some sort – such as a loss of a job or loved one – that provokes them to start their journey; then, internal and external conflicts arise that need to be overcome; finally, in the resolution, the character has learned something about themselves in a way that allows them to rejoin society. The “Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan has the elements of a bildungsroman; however, Tan weaves her story in an untraditional manner that highlights Jing-Mei's journey as well as emphasizing themes that are part of human nature. The novel opens at one of the meetings of the Joy Luck Club, where Jing-Mei Woo has come to take her mother's place at the mah jong table. Sitting on the three other sides of the table are the other women of the Joy Luck Club, all who have daughters about Jing-Mei's age. It is here that Jing-Mei learns about a quest that her mother was not able to complete before her death: to find her two other daughters that were left behind in China during wartime.
