Understanding Research Paper Assignment
This week's session covered the article "How to Read a Journal Article in Social
Psychology" by Jordan and Zanna. How to read a research article was the main emphasis of this
post. The format of a research article differs slightly from other types of publications. Review
and theoretical papers are easy to read because they are formatted like textbook articles. When I
had to look at research publications in the past, I would typically rush through them, only reading
the abstract, and not really comprehending what the articles were about.
After reading this post, I was able to search through articles to see whether they were
topics I wanted to research and, if so, to comprehend them thoroughly. Finding a genuine study
article on the topic I wanted to investigate this week, was difficult for me. Developmental
Psychology had a ton of articles, but many of them weren't research articles. When I did locate
research articles that peaked my attention, I carefully examined the title and was able to rule out
several based on the abstract, which was quite helpful. Having only read the abstract and several
of the introductions, I was able to identify some excellent articles.
