Self Concept Introspection- look into selves Reflected appraisals- reaction of others Self Perception- look @ behavior to see who we are (Bem’s) Self Comparison- compare ourselves to others who have similar trait Group identity- same attitudes and beliefs as those we share a group membership with Self Awareness- act in accordance with our values- can lead to poor decisions Duval’s Theory- we can direct our attn to the outside or the self, when we’re self- aware we notice the extent to which our behavior matches our ideals, when we see discrepancy, we’re motivated to reduce this, can reduce by controlling or changing behavior or escaping situation Emotions- directing self to action, changes in nervous system that occur as a change in the person’s understanding or perception of environment, serve purpose Self-Esteem- sociometer (Leary)- tells us our standing in the world, eval of current status, social group, difficult to affect directly- has level, stability, and accuracy Baumeister- narcissism- high but unstable, inaccurate
