Patrick McKeown Physics 1A Musumeci March 4, 2008 The Physics Behind the Powerball The Powerball is a wrist exercise tool that contains a gyroscope inside a plastic shell. Once the gyroscope is started spinning manually, the user rotates his or her wrist in a certain manner to cause the gyroscope to spin at faster and faster revolutions. This movement strengthens the wrist and hand muscles due to the repulsive force the powerball exerts on the hand when spinning. When spinning at 250 revolutions per second, the powerball exerts roughly 18 kgf/cm^2 of pressure on the arm holding it. The Powerball contains a small mass contained inside a spherical shell. The shell completely covers the gyroscope inside of it, except for a small opening so that the gyroscope can be started by spinning it with your fingers. The spinning mass is fixed to a thin metal axle whose ends are fixed in a circular groove that follows the equator of the outer shell.
