Post Reinforcement Phase – a pause in recognition of completion (size depends on length of schedule interval). Variable Ratio Schedule / VR – Reinforcement comes after an average # of inputs. The person never knows when he is going to be reinforced, but the more he responds the higher the likely hood to be reinforced. (Gambling – Tendency to continue to play even when he hasn’t won for a longtime). Partial reinforcement – builds up a resistance to extinction if only reinforced sometimes. (Behavior should be established first than partial reinforcement). Fixed Interval Schedule Work based on time, leads to procrastination- us behavior. Little to no activity than as deadline approaches you get a Surge of activity. Fixed interval schedule scallop – that surge of activity that comes right before a deadline, than once complete, activity once again, drops to zero (term paper). Variable interval schedule never know when variable will be, therefore never knows when is going to be reinforced. Fairly low but consistent rate of response (as the interval is lowered there is a higher rate of activity (pop quiz). Emotional aspect is different from what is experienced on a fixed interval schedule, can produce: stress, narcoticism and rarely; psychiatric problems. Behavior is a function of its consequences – if consistently happens in certain behaviors, person tends to engage in activities previously conditioned to do when in a distinct environment – Stimulus control- so environment also controls behavior [in addition to consequences] (wearing a hat).
