Future of Race Relations Discuss the causes for the Los Angeles Riots and how Korean American merchants became embroiled in the conflict? The Los Angeles riots of 1992 were sparked by the verdict, which acquitted four police officers accused of beating Rodney King, a black motorist, after a high-speed pursuit. This incident was the trigger to many other underlying causes, which will be described below. Another court case that acted as the catalyst to the 1992 riots was the killing of Latasha Harlins, who was shot dead by a female Korean shop owner, Mrs Du. Latasha was seen to putting a bottle of orange juice into her backpack but had the money in her hand. Mrs Du, however, did not see the money and accused Latasha Harlins of theft. They eventually got into an physical argument and when Latasha Harlins turned to leave, Mrs Du shot her in the back of the head. Mrs. Du was then convicted on voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to five years probabtion, 400 hours of community service and a five hundred dollar fine. The controversy was that the jury’s sentence was initially 16 years of jail. This huge discrepancy in sentencing led to unrest in the African
