Katherine Herrmann HIST 101-01 Professor Farrington 16 February 2007 Profiles in Courage–Anne Hutchinson 1. Most of the times, there no real “crimes” that were committed when the Puritans placed the stocks on a busy street. Like the character in the movie, most had done nothing at all to deserve the stocks—they were mainly put there as an example to scare people into behaving and “to keep control” of the colony. 2. For both Wilson and Winthrop, Anne Hutchinson’s request for Thursday meetings with Cotton and Wheelwright questioned their authority and position in front of the community. They were afraid that her actions would produce factions within the group. 3. Cotton, portrayed as the man in authority with the best sense of fairness, warned Anne to be moderate because he feared that the harmony of the group would be lost. His arguments were justified because he knew that what Anne was doing threatened the authorities of the colony.
