INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the Measuring and Enhancing Financial Performance module.
Being able to interpret financial information, to appreciate the financial implications of decisions and to present a
financial justification for a proposed course of action are extremely important skills for managers. This module will
help you develop your skills and confidence in carrying out the financial aspects of your current and future
managerial roles.
Your learning experience over the seven weeks of this module promises to be both challenging and highly
rewarding through a blend of independent, live classroom and team-based learning activities.
This module’s learning materials are organised into two halves. The first half provides an introduction to
understanding and interpreting the main financial statements for a business, the Statement of Profit or Loss,
Statement of Financial Position and Statement of Cash Flows, based on the requirements of International Financial
Reporting Standards (IFRS). The second half of the module introduces the financial information used by
managers in decision making, including the evaluation of investment opportunities and the calculation of
product/service costs.
Situated across the entire seven weeks of the module is the business simulation activity. This activity provides an
opportunity for students to apply the unit-level learning in an authentic, real-world scenario that promises to be both
challenging and highly rewarding. The business simulation will include both team-based and individual activities but
the assessments will be individual assignments.

After completing the module you will be able to:
1. interpret a range of different types of financial information
2. identify the limitations in financial information and explain the implications of these limitations on the
analysis and interpretation of that information
3. effectively use a range of accounting and financial tools to assist with management decision making and
performance assessment
4. communicate effective responses to business stakeholders, using appropriate financial language.
