Jordan Davidson Veritas Lux Mea Iraan Far-site 1 5/13/2009 My two favorite Victorian and Romantic poets By: Jordan Davidson I have been exposed to poets during my classes in English Literature that have awoken feelings that I have kept hidden for many years. The poets of whom I now speak are generally romantics, but there is room for the Victorian poets, also. The two Romantic poets are Wordsworth and Blake, and the two Victorian are Lord Alfred Tennyson and William Ernest Henley. To begin, I would like to write about Wordsworth, who has imparted an understanding of experience with life and the knowledge that can inspire men (and women) to understand their surroundings. My belief of this is because in one of my favorite poems which is “We are Seven” where the writer imparts a sense of what is left behind when we die. In this poem, the narrator comes across a single child and asks her “Sisters and Brothers, little Maid, How many may you be?” Then she responds, “We are Seven.” Her response is one that is astoundingly important because as it is explained later, there are only five left alive. Two of them are dead, lying in their coffins in a graveyard, yet her response still includes them. Her response imparts the special kinship felt within a family. How, even though two of her siblings have passed on, it doesn’t make them any less a part of her. Her response is one that shows how strong memories truly are binding and how they connect us to our family. It imparts to me how our own experiences with people and the bond between families can never be undone. This bond has been explored and can never truly be explained except through experience. Some instances where it has been explored are in movies such as Timeline and in books such as any of the Harry Potter series.
