9/27/07 Strategy -What you are doing depends on what others are doing -What effect your actions will have on others *Strategy must take into account both of these points -Obvious illustration: The Security Dilemma Terms that will crop up to be familiar with: 1. Cooperate 2. Defect 3. Communication 4. Credible Commitment 5. Dominant Strategy Games used allegorically in IR -Game #1- The Prisoner’s dilemma -2 guys rob a bank and escape -hide the money, put your gun under the bed -police get a tip, arrest you, suspicious of your actions -you and your friends are put in separate rooms -if you don’t confess, you go to jail -if you rat out your friend you go free -police offer the same deal to your friend -2 choices for each person -you talk, you get 0, he gets 15 -he talks, you get 15, he gets 0 -neither talk, you both get 2 -both talk, you both get 10 -2 new words, cooperate and defect -cooperate is help buddy, defect is to rat out -replace sentences with preference ordering -1 you defect, he cooperates (DC)
