Steps for Selecting and Acquiring an Information System
The steps for selecting and acquiring a health information system will be long and tedious
undertaking but a rewarding one if followed correctly. The benefits include protection of the
organization by looking out for its best interest, support from stakeholders, supports a successful
implementation plan, and provides for a throughout assessment of vendors. The process for
selecting a system should follow agreed upon procedure that is documented, communicated, and
well known throughout the organization (Balgrosky, 2015). This will ensure consistency and
fairness in systems selection.
According to Balgorsky, (2015), there are twelve steps to follow in the selecting and
acquiring system that could be used for all systems and facility types as well as sizes. The first
four steps establish the foundation for the selection process. The first is the development of the
business plan that will be used to establish support for the system purchase. The business plan
should clarify the need, how it supports the organization’s strategic plan, and what the system
will achieve. The second step is setting up a committee that will be made up of experts on both
the Information Technology and business side. The business side members are experts in the area
where the system will be used. They would have the most knowledge about how things are run.
