Makar 1Marylyn MakarMrs. AlexanderEnglish 11H - Period Three3 April 2019Organic food and its benefits have been overwhelmingly promoted by health fanatics. They advocate that non-GMO foods are a far better option than food that has added chemicals orhas been genetically modified. This new, highly encouraged diet has been dubbed the locavoremovement. Locavores dedicate themselves to being consumers of mostly locally grown orproduced products in order to be healthier and conserve the environment. These individuals, however, tend to overlook the damaging effects associated with the locavore movement. Whilethe movement is not flawless and should not completely overtake store bought produce, it isultimately beneficial for the citizens of a community and for the community itself due to itseconomic and nutritional benefits.Research has shown that the locavore movement has enormous economic advantages. Ithas been proven to provide “twice as much income for the local economy” than businessesowned by foreign producers (Source A). Locally grown food also generates income by givingfarmers a motive to maintain their farms and serve as the main supporters of their community.
