Samantha Need November 2, 2007 CSC 101-04 Term Paper- Ergonomics Executive Summary If you asked almost anyone if they had used a computer today close to all of the answers you received would be a yes. People use them for all different reasons but they all experience the same problems. When someone sits down at a computer they most likely do not pay much attention to the position of their hands or even the position of the mouse unless it is uncomfortable. This discomfort that is usually overlooked is the result of an insufficient ergonomic working environment. Little attention is usually paid to these discomforts because who could believe that serious injuries could result from computer use? Every 18 seconds someone gets a serious injury form using a computer. The only answer to these problems is ergonomics. One may ask what is ergonomics in terms of computing? What problems are the laws of ergonomics intended to fix and how are they caused? And what kind of technology has been developed to comply with the laws of ergonomics? This paper will describe ergonomics, “the science of work: of the people who do it and the way it is done, of the tools and equipment they use, the places they work in, and the psychosocial aspects of the working situation (Pheasant, 2006)”, the result of ignoring it, and technologies used to prevent it. There are two main categories those who work with computers in a poor ergonomic environment fall into: upper extremities and eye/vision problems. The injuries acquired from inadequate ergonomic workstations are long-term so whatever precautions can be taken should. Since this has become a growing concern there are technologies developed to prevent discomfort and potential injury. This is a topic I was interested in because being a graphic design major I am working with computers constantly and hearing of a possibility of injury from that really struck my interest. Learning about these things will help me do all I can to prevent any injuries related to my computer use. Need

Ergonomics Nowadays, almost everyone has a computer they use for at least one task a day. Most users do not consider how using computers with the wrong etiquette can have a negative affect on your body; simply by having your mouse pad in the wrong place can eventually possibly cause discomfort. The word for the right combination of user to product to task solution to the discomforts caused by incorrect computer is called ergonomics. What is ergonomics in terms of computing? What problems are the laws of ergonomics intended to fix and how are they caused? What kind of technology has been developed to comply with the laws of ergonomics? Ergonomics is, “the science of work: of the people who do it and the way it is done, of the tools and equipment they use, the places they work in, and the psychosocial aspects of the working situation.” The word ergonomics was derived from the Greek ergos, meaning work, and nomos , meaning natural law. This term was created by a society called ‘the study of human
