Hello class,The two settlements I chose for this discussion are the Chesapeake and NewEngland colonies. Both colonies shared a common language, and both wereinterested in self-government, but physical and cultural differencesseparated these two regions.The settlement patterns of the Chesapeake colonies began in the 1600swhen many settlers arrived in the Chesapeake Bay colonies of Virginia andMaryland for a better life and to work in the tobacco fields. The Englishmigrated here for the economy, hoping to find gold but discovered tobaccowas the means to making money. “Tobacco became currency: people paidfines and taxes in pounds of tobacco. The cash crop's value became the focalpoint for colonial protective legislation and tobacco provided Virginia with animportant revenue stream” (NPS). To help with the increase of growingtobacco fields, many young migrants became indentured servants workingfor many years in exchange for shelter, food, clothes, and land.
