Connor Kenan 711438817 TA: Ben Riegel Rand, Prompt 2 The idea of evil is one that can mean many different things to many different people in many different situations. In Ayn Rand’s novel, Atlas Shrugged , she offers up one view of evil that is quite different from the typical Christian ideal of evil and of morality as well. Rand says that evil stems from not living for oneself and for not following reason as the utmost supreme force, a force that alone should be man’s guide to living along with living for oneself. These ideas are expressed in both the actions and descriptions of the main characters in her novel. The looters are the evil men, the ones that reject these ideas, while the “men of mind” who go on strike embody her ideals with John Galt as their leader. Pain and suffering is something that Rand thinks can be avoided almost entirely as long as men use reason as their guide and don’t allow the looters to keep them in their controlled, backwards, and doomed to fail world. Rand’s ideas on evil and pain and suffering are all somewhat related and if followed, can lead to a world where evil is almost nonexistent Evil according to Rand is not the evil that we think of as Christians, in one light it could almost be seen as the opposite. Evil to Rand is rejecting reason, it is following the Morality of Death, and it is altruism, or not living for oneself. The men of mind in Atlas Shrugged personify perfectly men who live for themselves and live to produce. Their standard of value is based on the advancement of life; both living for oneself and producing in order to make money are advancements of life, and hence good in Rand’s objectivism. She states that anything that opposes this production, such as the looters who do not abide by the laws of reason, is evil for hindering reason’s power. Rand
