María C. Fernández Eve Spangler ADSO 2501.01 Durkheim The master question that organizes all of Durkheim’s work is:How is social order possible?; What answers did he find? “People in society have a ‘collective conscience’: a sense of belonging to a community with others and hence feeling a moral obligation to live up to its demands”(Collins 105). Without this conscience there would not be any possibility of minimum trust or respect for other individuals. This purports a logical argument where society needs to be based on a common moral order instead of a rational self-interest; therefore a ‘pre contractual solidarity’ must exist before contracts can be depended upon (Collins 105). He was constantly persisting in the need to remove this inequalities which produce the forced division of labour rather than a meritocracy based on inherent talent and preference. And the only way that the anomic and abnormal forms of division of labour could only be solved is by more planning of the economy, better organization and more organized involvement of workers and employers in the joint regulation
